Pigmentation & Sun Damage

What Actually Works?

As the days get longer in Gloucestershire, many of us start to notice the “memory” of previous summers appearing on our skin. Whether it’s stubborn melasma, sunspots from holidays past, or the red-brown marks left behind by acne, pigmentation is one of the most common and frustrating skin concerns we treat at our Stroud clinic.

But with so many “brightening” creams and quick-fix products on the market, what actually delivers results?

Understanding Pigmentation

Pigmentation occurs when your skin produces too much melanin in a concentrated area. This can be triggered by:

UV exposure — one of the main causes of sunspots and uneven tone
Hormonal changes — often linked to melasma
Inflammation — such as post-acne marks or pigmentation after skin trauma

To treat pigmentation effectively, we need to do more than simply exfoliate the skin. The best results come from a personalised plan that supports the skin barrier, helps regulate pigment production, and protects the skin from further UV damage.

So, What Are The Best Treatments For Pigmentation?

There isn’t one single answer, because pigmentation can vary in depth, cause and severity. At Glowing by Leah, we take a progressive, skin-first approach, which may include medical-grade skincare, chemical peels, advanced facials, skin boosters, LED light therapy and, where appropriate, more intensive depigmentation treatments such as Cosmelan®.

For some patients, a carefully prescribed skincare routine with pigment-balancing ingredients and daily SPF may be the best place to start. For others, a course of professional chemical peels or supportive skin treatments may help improve tone, texture and brightness over time.

The key is choosing the right treatment for your skin, rather than over-treating or using harsh products that could make pigmentation worse.

Medical-Grade Skincare & SPF

Skincare plays a huge role in managing pigmentation, especially during spring and summer. Ingredients such as vitamin C, retinoids, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid and pigment-inhibiting formulas can help brighten the skin and support a more even-looking complexion.

However, SPF is non-negotiable. Without daily broad-spectrum sun protection, pigmentation can quickly darken again, even after successful treatment.

This is why we often begin with skin preparation before moving into more active in-clinic treatments.

Chemical Peels For Pigmentation

Chemical peels can be a brilliant option for improving uneven skin tone, dullness, congestion and superficial pigmentation. They work by encouraging controlled exfoliation and skin renewal, helping to lift damaged surface cells and reveal fresher, brighter-looking skin underneath.

At Glowing by Leah, we use professional peels as part of a wider skin plan, often combining them with homecare, SPF and barrier support for safer, longer-lasting results.

Advanced Option: Cosmelan® Depigmentation Peel

For more stubborn pigmentation, including melasma and deeper, long-standing patches, we may recommend Cosmelan®.

Cosmelan isn’t just a standard facial or peel. It is a professional depigmenting method designed to target pigmentation more intensively.

Unlike standard chemical peels that mainly focus on surface renewal, Cosmelan has a dual action:

Corrective — helping to lift and reduce existing visible pigmentation
Regulative — helping to interrupt the process that triggers excess melanin production

The treatment begins with an intensive mask applied in-clinic at our Stroud clinic, followed by a strict homecare programme over several months. It does require commitment, but for the right patient, the results can be significant.

Supporting Treatments For Healthier, Brighter Skin

Pigmentation treatment is not always about one dramatic peel. In many cases, we may recommend supportive treatments to improve overall skin health, hydration and resilience.

These may include LED light therapy, advanced facials, skin boosters or treatments that help calm inflammation and support the skin barrier. This is especially important if your pigmentation is linked to acne, sensitivity, inflammation or compromised skin.

Healthy skin responds better to treatment, which is why our approach is always focused on long-term correction rather than quick, aggressive fixes.

Why Start Now?

You might think winter is the only time to treat pigmentation, but managing uneven skin tone is a year-round process.

While intensive peels require extra sun caution, starting your pigmentation journey now means we can prepare your skin properly with professional-grade skincare, pigment inhibitors and high-factor SPF before peak summer.

If you are heading on a sunny holiday soon, we may delay certain treatments. However, we can still help you build a protective, brightening skincare plan to reduce the risk of pigmentation worsening through July and August.

Ready For A Clearer Complexion?

Don’t let sun damage or uneven pigmentation dictate how you feel about your skin this summer. Whether you need medical-grade skincare, a course of chemical peels, supportive skin treatments or the intensive power of Cosmelan®, we can help you choose the right approach for your skin.
