Understanding Alopecia: You’re Not Alone, and You Have Options

Hair loss is one of those things nobody really talks about until it happens to them. Then, suddenly, it’s all-consuming — the way you part your hair, the angle you sit in photos, whether you can wear it up today or need it down. At Glowing by Leah, we see this every week, and we want you to know two things: alopecia is far more common than most people realise, and there are genuinely effective treatments to help.

This is our guide to what alopecia actually is, why it happens, and how we can support you — physically and emotionally — through it.

What Is Alopecia, Really?

“Alopecia” is simply the medical term for hair loss, but it covers a surprisingly wide range of conditions:

  • Androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss) — the most common type, driven by genetics and hormones, showing up as gradual thinning at the crown or a receding hairline.
  • Alopecia areata — an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing patchy or, in some cases, more extensive hair loss.
  • Telogen effluvium — temporary, diffuse shedding often triggered by stress, illness, childbirth, or a major life event. This one catches a lot of people off guard because it can appear months after the trigger.
  • Traction alopecia — hair loss caused by tension from tight hairstyles, extensions, or certain styling habits over time.

Understanding which type you’re dealing with matters enormously, because the right treatment depends entirely on the underlying cause. This is why we always start with a proper consultation rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

The Part We Don’t Talk About Enough

Hair loss isn’t just cosmetic. Study after study links it to real drops in self-esteem, confidence, and even social withdrawal. Many of our clients tell us they felt dismissed elsewhere — told it’s “just hair” or “nothing to worry about.” We don’t see it that way. If it’s affecting how you feel about yourself, it matters, full stop.

That’s why psychological support and awareness are built into how we approach hair loss at Glowing by Leah — not as an afterthought, but as part of the care plan itself. You’ll never be rushed through a consultation or made to feel like your concerns are trivial.

How Glowing by Leah Can Help

We offer a range of clinically-backed treatments, and — importantly — we often combine them for a more comprehensive approach, tailored to your specific type of hair loss.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy

We draw a small sample of your own blood, spin it to concentrate the growth-factor-rich plasma, and reintroduce it into the scalp. Those growth factors help stimulate dormant follicles and support a healthier growing environment for existing hair.

Exosome Therapy

One of the more exciting advances in hair restoration, exosome therapy uses signalling molecules that help “wake up” follicle activity and support the scalp’s regenerative processes. We often pair this with other treatments to enhance results.

Microneedling

Fine, controlled micro-injuries to the scalp trigger the body’s natural healing response and improve absorption of active ingredients — making it a brilliant complement to PRP or exosome treatments, as well as an effective option on its own.

LED & Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

A non-invasive, pain-free treatment using specific light wavelengths to stimulate cellular activity in the follicles. It’s relaxing, requires no downtime, and is well suited to regular, ongoing sessions as part of a maintenance plan.

Mesotherapy

Targeted micro-injections deliver a tailored blend of vitamins, amino acids, and nutrients directly to the scalp — nourishing follicles and supporting the conditions hair needs to grow.

Plinest Polynucleotides

Plinest uses purified polynucleotides — naturally-derived molecules known for their regenerative and tissue-repair properties — injected into the scalp to help revitalise the follicle environment, support microcirculation, and encourage a healthier setting for hair growth. It’s a treatment we’re increasingly pairing with PRP and microneedling for clients looking for a more intensive regenerative approach.

Psychological Support & Awareness

Alongside every treatment plan, we take time to talk, to listen, and to make sure you’re supported emotionally, not just clinically. Hair loss can be isolating — you shouldn’t have to navigate it alone.

Why a Combined Approach Works Best

Hair restoration isn’t usually about one magic treatment — it’s about layering therapies that work together. A typical plan might combine microneedling to prime the scalp, PRP, exosomes or Plinest polynucleotides to stimulate follicles, and LED therapy to maintain results between sessions. During your consultation, we’ll assess your hair loss pattern, discuss your history and goals, and build a plan specifically for you.

Take the First Step

If you’ve noticed thinning, shedding, or bald patches — or you’re simply not feeling like yourself when you look in the mirror — please don’t wait it out in silence. The earlier hair loss is addressed, the more treatment options tend to be effective.

Book a confidential consultation with Glowing by Leah today. Let’s talk about what’s happening, understand the why, and build a plan to help you feel like you again.

This blog is for educational purposes and general awareness. Every case of hair loss is different — a full consultation is required to determine the right treatment plan for you.
